Types of Ginseng

  • Red Ginseng: Fresh ginseng that is steamed without peeling and then dried. It has a light yellowish-brown or reddish-brown color.
  • Hongmi Ginseng: The roots separated from the main body after making red ginseng. It tends to have a stronger bitter taste than the main body. Hongmi is graded by the thickness of the roots, with the first grade being the thinnest.
  • Hongjungmi Ginseng: The thick root parts of red ginseng that have been steamed and dried.
  • Sliced Red Ginseng: Ginseng that has been harvested, washed, steamed, and dried, then sliced for easier consumption.
  • Yang Ginseng: A premium grade of ginseng that is higher quality than regular red ginseng.
  • Black Ginseng: Fresh ginseng that has been steamed and dried multiple times (up to 7-9 times), giving it a black color.

How to Store and Prepare Red Ginseng

  1. Wash it thoroughly before use.
  2. To separate compressed ginseng, apply heat to soften it.
  3. Wrap it in a cloth and gently hit it to break it apart.
  4. Store in a dry, shaded room at room temperature.
  5. During the rainy season, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator to prevent mold.

How to Consume Red Ginseng

  1. Follow the instructions if using a ginseng extractor.
  2. Boil 12-20g of ginseng in 0.6L of water. Once the water reduces to 1/3, it is ready to drink.
  3. Boil 20-50g of ginseng, 12-20g of jujube, and 4g of ginger in 2L of water. Once the water reduces to 1/3, it is ready to drink.
  4. Grind red ginseng into powder and mix it with milk or yogurt. You can also add 1-2 spoons of honey, or mix the powder with honey and consume it as a paste, or sprinkle it over a salad.
  • For powdered ginseng, adults should consume one teaspoon per day.

Caution When Consuming Red Ginseng

  1. Though red ginseng generally has no side effects, it may cause hives or rashes in some individuals. It is recommended to test for any sensitivities before consuming.
  2. For children aged 10-15, it is recommended to take half of the adult dosage, and for children under 5, about 1/3 of the adult dosage.
The best approach is to consult a Korean medicine clinic to determine if red ginseng is suitable for the individual’s constitution.
